1) THE RELIEF OF PEOPLE WITH A LEARNING DISABILITY IN PARTICULAR BY THE PROVISION OF HELP AND SUPPORT FOR THEM AND FOR THEIR FAMILIES, DEPENDANTS AND CARERS, AND TO PREVENT LEARNING DISABILITIES FOR THE PUBLIC BENEFIT AMONGST PERSONS WITH A LEARNING DISABILITY.

2) TO PROVIDE OR ASSIST IN THE PROVISION OF FACILITIES FOR THE RECREATION OR OTHER LEISURE TIME OCCUPATION FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVE NEED THEREOF BY REASONS OF LEARNING DISABILITY WITH THE OBJECT OF IMPROVING THEIR CONDITIONS OF LIFE. “LEARNING DISABILITY” MEANS ANY DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITY OF THE MIND AND ANY ASSOCIATED CONDITION HOWSOEVER CAUSED AND WHETHER MILD, MODERATE OR SEVERE

Mission Statement

Our History

1951 – The Chelmsford and District Society for the Mentally Handicapped was formed by a group of like minded parents.

1965 -  The group was re-formed as a Charity, became affiliated to Royal Mencap and the name changed to Chelmsford Mencap.

Monday to Friday 10am – 1pm

Chelmsford Mencap has several new and exciting ’Buddy’ vacancies available during the Easter and Summer holidays for young teenagers.  Buddy’s will be matched to children of similar ages and/or interests to help them achieve a greater level of independence whilst at our Daybreak Scheme, this will on some occasions involve chaperoning special needs members on exciting trip activities under the guidance of a Group Leader.

This club is closed during term time, please visit our CMYC (Youth Club), Outreach Academy and Gateway Club for weekly term time activities!

Club Coordinator – Gateway Club

From October we will be running a programme of events, tutorials, lectures and lessons on varying subjects from literacy and numeracy to pottery and arts and crafts.

We would very much like to hear from any volunteers who have a skill that they
would like to teach for a one to two hour slot between 10am and 12 noon
once a month.

Daybreak Scheme & Daybreak Saturday Club

Chelmsford Mencap has several rewarding vacancies available during the Easter, Summer and Christmas holidays for both school children over the age of 13 years and experienced Support Workers who are working towards an NVQ Level 2 qualified in childcare.

You will be required to assist the children aged 5-18 years with learning difficulties with in-house activities and outings  to help them achieve a greater level of independence.

CMYC (Chelmsford Mencap Youth Club)

Chelmsford Mencap has several rewarding vacancies available term time for both children over the age of 15 years and experienced Support Workers who are NVQ Level 1 qualified in childcare.

You will be required to assist the children and young adults aged 16-25 years with learning difficulties with in-house activities to help them achieve a greater level of independence.

Gateway Club & Gateway Dance Group

Chelmsford Mencap has several rewarding vacancies available term time for both children over the age of 15 years and experienced Support Workers.

You will be required to assist the children and adults aged 16+years with learning difficulties with in-house activities to help them achieve a greater level of independence.

Chelmsford Mencap has several rewarding vacancies available during the Easter, Summer and Christmas holidays for both students ideally over the age of 18 years and experienced Support Workers.

You will be required to assist adults over the age of 19 years with learning difficulties with in-house activities and outings  to help them achieve a greater level of independence.
